Dr. Lorant is the Associate Director of the Neonatal Fellowship Program. Her primary interest is in international health. Dr. Lorant has traveled to rural Mexico with neonatology fellows, pediatric residents and medical students since 2005. The program in Mexico is an IU sponsored service learning program done in collaboration with the departments of nursing, dentistry and public health. Dr. Lorant's contribution to the program has been to educate local physicians and provide equipment to local clinics so that they can better serve their own patients. For several years, Dr. Lorant has taught the neonatal resuscitation program in rural Mexico. In addition, Dr. Lorant has organized a research project on Hispanic attitudes regarding death and disability that was initiated in rural Mexico and is being completed in Indianapolis. Results from this study will be used to develop a bereavement program for our Hispanic families in Indiana. Dr. Lorant and a colleague in pediatrics have developed an exchange program for medical students and pediatric residents between IU and Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Hidalgo (UAEH) and Hospital del Nino DIF.
