Nearly 900 critically ill infants are admitted each year to the 47 bed Riley Hospital Level III Newborn Intensive Care Unit. Approximately 70% of the admitted neonates are transferred from outlying hospitals from across the Midwest. The NICU in Riley Hospital enjoys the support of multiple pediatric and surgical sub-specialties. These patients benefit from the latest in available technology, including high frequency ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide and extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation.

The faculty and fellows at Indiana University also staff the Level III Newborn ICU at Methodist Hospital. This large, urban hospital in downtown Indianapolis supports nearly 5000 deliveries each year, and the 35 bed NICU has the latest medical and surgical technology at its disposal.

The Indiana University Hospital accommodates 1,000 deliveries yearly, most of which are high-risk patients referred to the Maternal-Fetal Medicine staff. IU hospital has a newly-renovated 24 bed Level II nursery, staffed by IU faculty and fellows. The IU-Riley Hospital for Children Perinatal-Fetal Center is a partnership between a very large and experienced group of Obstetric specialists, Neonatologists, Pediatric Surgeons, Pediatric Cardiologists, and other pediatric medical sub-specialists. The Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists are within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the first and oldest program in Obstetrics in Indiana primarily based at Indiana University Hospital.  The Department has more than 30 faculty members who are full-time Obstetricians with vast experience and expertise in women's health.  They provide comprehensive prenatal diagnosis, fetal and maternal care, and genetic counseling with the largest collective experience and expertise in Indiana. The obstetric faculty also are pioneering in their research efforts in the areas of pharmacogenetics and therapeutics in maternal health.

Wishard Memorial Hospital, a county hospital serving the local community, has more than 3,000 deliveries yearly and has a busy 24 bed Level III nursery, staffed by IU faculty and fellows.

In addition, the faculty of IU staff the Special Care Nurseries at Community Hospitals of Indianapolis, St. Francis Hospital - Indianapolis and Deaconess Women's Hospital - Evansville. These private hospitals each have 15 bed nurseries and provide care for lower acuity patients.

Riley Hospital for Children supports a very active Neonatal-Pediatric Transport Program, which is available 24 hours a day to transport critically ill infants from across Indiana and the Midwest. The transport team offers ground and air transport of neonates. Fellows may participate in the transport program as a moonlighting opportunity.

Fellows also participate in the Newborn Follow-up Program in the Riley Outpatient Center. This weekly outpatient clinical experience is an opportunity to follow patients from the NICU on a long-term basis, accessing neuro-development skills and milestone attainment in NICU graduates.
