Research, teaching and clinical care are essential components of a well-rounded fellowship training program. Excellence in clinical care is dependent upon application of new knowledge as it emerges from research and development. Many questions and hypotheses, which have stimulated scientific investigation in perinatal medicine, have emerged from challenges encountered during the provision of care to critically ill neonates. Therefore, we believe an excellent fellowship program requires equilibrium among clinical exposure, teaching opportunities and well-elaborated scientific investigation.
